Rua Hang Yao, Ko Phi Phi, Thailand

Taken with Nikon D60, dated Jul 2009

Rua Hang Yao is a traditional Thai long-tailed boat. It is a sleek, elegant and colourful hand-carved wooden craft of varying size having. In the rear, a propeller attached to the end of a long pole, powered by an enormous engine, usually taken straight from a car or truck. The propeller can be raised or lowered at will by the driver, and thus the boat can navigate not only in deep but also shallow water.

The boats are then decorated with colourful ribbons tied to the front, a relic of ancient times when animism was the main belief in the region. The colours are designed to appease the spirits of the seas which will ensure the boat and crew have safe passage and good fishing.

Long-tailed boats are commonly used for coastal transportation, small scale fishing and tourism. The boat is outfitted with sun shade and can transport between 8-10 people. They are solid and seaworthy, and give a smooth ride even in rough weather. There is one problem with long-tailed boat. Many people think they are too noisy. Their motors are quite loud, sound like dragsters - the racing cars. However, it was a great Thai experience.
