The Lion (Panthera Leo) is one of the Big Five of Africa. The term "Big Five" refers to five of Africa's greatest wild animals. The rest of them are Leopard, Rhinoceros, Elephant and African Buffalo.
This, the so-called King of Beasts has short and massive legs, with large feet and heavy, sharp claws. The male lion is highly distinctive and is easily recognized by its mane. The coat is tawny yellow, with accents of black on the manes, ears, and tail tips of mature animals. The lions congregate in groups knows as prides. A pride consists of a group of related females and their cubs with a small number of males. They typically inhabit savanna and grassland, although they may take to bush and forest.
